Another Great Hamburger in Topeka, KS

Why are the best places for hamburgers in the most hole in the wall place?  That may be a question that we can get some government funding for the research.  Seems like a great investment to me what about you Wally?

The Fryer Shack is a newer establishment, located at what I understand is the original Bobo's site at 1221 SW Huntoon.  Feel secure going here in the his neighborhood.  Huntoon is a very busy street and the parking lot is very well lit, maybe too well lit.  You can see the pile of destruction material in the back.  The place needs a bit of clean up; which does appear to be happening slow but sure.  The first time I visited was last year right after they opened and the air conditioner was broke.

Topeka food and flicks had a few bad comments but if you might need to work yourself up to the grease on some items or you might find yourself feeling a bit queasy.  But they pride themselves on the greasy bags that your french fries or fried dill pickle chips.  I hope they are using a healthy oil (haha).

Onto the burgers.  The burgers are a good size and you can pick between Swiss and American cheese for a cheeseburger.  The burgers have a consistency that is not a crumbly cheap hamburger.  These appear to be a special ground that has a great texture as well as taste.  I think that the buns are home made (well kinda home made).  I always wondered about that statement for a restaurant "Home Made"; does the manager take the items home and make things at home while everyone is sleeping.  I think I would have to give these burgers a 9 on a scale of 10.  A 9 only because it is hard to get a perfect out of me.

The wings were very tasty as well.  Someone mentioned in a previous review that there was some pink in their wing.  That happens in the best and most supervised kitchens.  Doesn't necessarily mean that your food is under-cooked.  Emma Christensen posts in her blog, and I quote: "The USDA says that as long as all parts of the chicken have reached a minimum internal temperature of 165°, it is safe to eat. Color does not indicate doneness.  The USDA further explains that even fully cooked poultry can sometimes show a pinkish tinge in the meat and juices. This is particularly true of young chickens whose bones and skin are still very permeable. Pigment in the bone marrow can color the surrounding tissue and make the bones themselves look very dark. Hemoglobin in the muscles can likewise react with air during cooking to give the meat a pinkish color even after cooking. The chicken's feed and whether it's been frozen can also affect the final color."    I will say that the wings were the best that I have had in Topeka (although they could have been a bit larger).  I did actually get some to go along with my burger on Thursday but went back last evening and grabbed a couple dozen to go home with me for dinner.  If you get the bone out double your order cause they are like popcorn chicken size.  I was there at the end of the day and they ran out of bone ins.

Now as far as esthetic appeal goes this needs some work.  The mother and daughter team during the lunch hour on Thursday walked over, around, and stepped on a rag laying on the floor.  Sorry I couldn't figure out how to rotate the picture.  I almost reached over and picked it up for them; but took a picture instead.  They were very friendly as was the young lady Friday evening (I think her name was Stacia) and I think the Friday night gal was the owner's daughter (or at least the cook's daughter).  Friday night I got a discount on my wings as they were out of the bone in wings; this was a great reach out to say we are sorry.

Did you know that Panda's eat Bamboo 12-14 hours per day?

What are you doing for Super Bowl?

What's in your chili??
OK – Super Bowl Sunday is coming in just a couple days. What is your favorite part of the Super Bowl?  Is your favorite the game, the commercials, the food, the friends and fellowship?  Please let me know.  Mine is probably the food (combined with the friends and the fellowship); however this year I am in a dilemma and need your help.  What should I make for the Covenant Baptist Church Souper Bowl?  For years I have entered a chili in the chili cookoff.  I have actually won a few times and got my name etched on the proverbial chili pot, however this year might be the year I break from the chili path and bring something different.
Today, on The Chew, (if you haven’t seen it, it is a pretty good daytime talk show centered around cooking, featuring Michael Symon, Mario Batali, Daphne Oz, Clinton Kelly,  and Carla Hall) was about recipes for Super Bowl.  Michael had the 49ers and prepared some chorizo burritos and Mario had the Ravens and prepared Baltimore crab cakes.  Both of these looked delicious and I am putting the chorizo burritos on my list of items to choose from for Sunday’s feast.  Oh, the feast will be at Covenant Baptist Church located at 5440 SW 37th Street in Topeka.  If you want to enter chili in the contest you need to have your chili in the kitchen by 4 p.m.  If you don’t want to bring chili, you may bring a side dish or dessert to share.  This is where you come in.

Please let me know what your favorite football game snack is.  Right now my list includes the chorizo burritos, bacon wrapped jalapenos, bacon wrapped smokies, smoked chicken wings, spicy buffalo wings, and shrimp filled wontons.  I will be picking one – please help me decide which one to pick.  Comment below and pick one on my list or suggest something else.  If I use your suggestion you may win a Pampered Chef product.
Everyone is welcome at the Souper Bowl Chili Cookoff.  Please join us.

After Columbus - Heading home

Well doing a blog is kinda like reading the Bible in that if you skip a day then it is easier to skip the next day.  O and if you skip that day it is very easy to skip the next day - SOOO - I certainly apologize to those that have been following me for not sticking to my daily schedule.

Well we drove a few hours after Columbus and stopped just west of Indianapolis for the night.  Trying to lessen the drive the next day to bring us on home.

Of course the "I want to get home" syndrome was being felt by all three of us but moreso by Betsey and Josh.  I am not normally a gotta get home kinda guy - maybe it is the wanderlust left in me from my Navy travels.  However, I was itchin to get out of the car.  By the end of the trip it will have ended up being more than 3500 miles in 9 days.  That is an average of 388 miles per day and one day we didn't drive the car.

We were going to go to Highway 61 Roadhouse in St Louis that serves up Louisiana fare (bbq spaghetti, andouille sausage, gumbo, etc).  But it was a little early for lunch and I took the north bypass across the Mississippi (first time for that - you don't see the arch at all) and Highway 61 is southwest of St Louis - looks like that might be another trip.

Oh - Speaking of another trip - Betsey and I have decided that we will be doing some weekend jaunts to some places and continue this glutinous fried food excursions on a smaller scale.  So if anybody would like to join us on a day or overnight trip to some wonderful (hopefully) eating establishments please let me know.

OK - back to the trip and where did we go for lunch.  Well - if you are a Mizzou Alumni then you are probably familiar with Shakespeare's Pizza.  The first time that we experienced Shakespeare's Pizza we were on our way to Caveman Zipline with Daniel and Tanner.  That was a fun weekend - I was a bit scared to do that but it was fun and I would do it again.

Back to the FOOD - Shakespeare's Pizza is great pizza and they have 3 locations around Columbia, MO.  So the next time you are traveling through Missouri and need a pit stop - venture downtown to Shakespeare's Pizza.  We ordered up a large meat lover's and their menu states that they will charge up the defibrillator just in case.  Complete with Pepperoni, Canadian Bacon, Italian Sausage, Lean Ground Beef (glad it was lean), and Breakfast Bacon (again as my friend +Wally Roberts says if it is bacon it is good.  Oh and there is a picture on the wall in the back room that looks like my brother Allen.

Back on the road - I had planned on stopping at Ozarkland on the way by but if you reference paragraph 3 above - you will know why we didn't.  Ozarkland is where you can buy the moccasins for yourself or for your granddaughter.  I think she liked them.   =====================>>>>>>>>>

Made it home on Sunday afternoon - +Joshua Litscher was able to watch a little bit of the Bronco game on the way home thanks to the spotty Team Mobile Hot Spot that I got for +Betsey Litscher before the trip.  The hot spot worked pretty good as long as we had phone reception - duh - I guess I expected it to be just a little bit better than my phone hot spot.

Thank you to +Justin Gilstrap for holding down the homestead whilst we were away.

After the trip will be on the next post.  Keep your eyes out for the picture of me in sunglasses for your free Pampered Chef gift certificate.  First one to spy me with my sunglasses on gets a GC.
